The Billerica Spelling Bee is an activity of the Billerica Partners for Education, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization.
The mission of the Billerica Partners for Education is:
- TO SHARE ideas, expertise and resources among the public schools, business community, higher education and the Billerica community;
- TO DEVELOP collaborative projects that support and enrich Billerica’s public education and
- TO FUND innovative projects and programs that advance both public education and the mission of the Partners.
The Billerica Spelling Bee is open to students living in Billerica in grades three through eight. Our purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. This new event is intended to encourage and celebrate academic excellence in our community.
Our first event took place on February 6, 2010. Now in our seventh year, we’ve had the pleasure of having more than 1,000 Billerica students participate in the competition.
We created this event for kids like ours – kids who love books, who love to spell, and who have special gifts that can shine, especially when given opportunities like the Billerica Spelling Bee.
How the Billerica Spelling Bee went from an idea to a reality
Our interest started while watching the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May 2009. We were impressed with the students’ focus and determination. We asked ourselves “Why isn’t there an annual spelling bee event in Billerica?” We have great programs for performing arts, visual arts, sports, and much more. But there isn’t an academic event of this type that shows the best and brightest that Billerica has to offer.
So we decided to go for it and see if we could put a plan and team together to make this great event come together. At that point we decided to reach out to the Billerica Partners for Education to see if this event might be something they’d have interest in adding to their calendar, especially since they already lead great events like the annual Art and Talent shows as well as the Fights for Education.
On June 9, 2009, we met with the Billerica Partners for Education Board of Directors to present the high-level plan for the Billerica Spelling Bee. They voted to support the event, appointing Dr. Richard Safier, assistant superintendent, Billerica Public Schools as the Billerica Partners for Education executive sponsor of the event. Michael and Denise Moore will serve as co-chairs of the Billerica Spelling Bee.
As a follow up to the Billerica Partners for Education meeting, Michael met with the superintendent of schools and the elementary and middle school principals on June 11, 2009 to present the plan and solicit their support. The principals approved the plan and Kennedy Elementary School principal David Marble and Ditson Elementary School principal Bill Downing both signed on to participate in the Billerica Spelling Bee committee to assist with the design of the event. The original plan was revised with feedback and input from the Billerica Partners for Education and school principals.
